Search Phrases. What the?!

22 Feb 2005 05:17 PM

I just installed AWStats on my local box and ran a few of my Apache logs through it. One of the features I noticed right away was the list of “Key phrases used on search engines". Here are some of the strange ones leading people to this site:

Perverts:
my girlfriends legs pictures - Why would I have pictures of your girlfriend’s legs?
obsession on womens legs - Someone that shares my problem.
photos of your girlfriends - No pictures of legs? Plain ol’ girlfriends will have to do…
strong tough pussy - Looking for exercise tips?
Stoners and Drinkers:
how to roll a big spliff - Same as rolling a little one… But bigger.
prevent drunk dialing - If you can still see the phone after drinking, then you ain’t drunk enough.
haha funny tricks - The “haha” was thrown in for emphasis.
Speed Freaks:
why red is faster - One of life’s truly unknown mysteries
red cars go faster - Don’t argue with facts. Yes, my baby is red too.
Old School Geeks:
commodore 64 flash version - Macromedia, are you listening? There is real demand for this product.
Insomniacs:
sleep is overrated - I agree, but you gotta do it if you wanna get up for work.
sleep work - Now looking for tips on how to sneak a nap in at work. The boss won’t be happy.
People with opinions:
this is awesome - I am teh best!
i know my site sucks - I am teh sucks!
People that left me guessing:
guess who i ve been dancing with - Who?
15% people have one a month - Have “one” what?

Managing CSS Hacks

25 Jan 2005 10:38 AM

Joen from noscope posted an entry titled Showing CSS to IE only (The Underscore Hack). I was a bit surprised that he was recommending this hack since it doesn’t validate (Update 30/May/2005: It is actualy valid CSS 2.1). Turns out that quite a few people in his comments didn’t really know much about other valid CSS hacks which could be used. A great reference I use for this sort of stuff is the CSS Filters section over at dithered.com. I also made a quick comment on noscope about how I handle my CSS hacks. I thought it might be a good idea to talk about it here for future reference.

The method I use separates browser hacks into individual style sheets (as much as possible). I’m currently using this method on this site, but it involves a few more alternate style sheets, so I’ll show you a simplified version below. I start by creating a “master importer” style sheet. This is linked normally in the html head:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="mystyle.css" title="mystyle">

This style sheet contains the following lines:

@import "all.css";
/*\*/ @import "hacks-ie-win.css"; /**/
/*\*//*/ @import "hacks-ie-mac.css"; /**/

Firefox 1.0 and Site Updates

10 Nov 2004 11:09 AM

Firefox 1.0 Released!

After two years worth of hard work by a great team of people, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 is finally out! A huge congratulations to everyone involved in the project. Your effort is appreciated more than you’ll ever know. Firefox is available for all major platforms and you won’t miss out on features just because you don’t run the latest OS and service pack. If you’ve been waiting for an official release before trying it or recommending it to friends, then stop waiting! Get Firefox now!

In other news, I’ve made a few changes to the site:

Let’s see how long it takes before Phono Phunk explodes in a ball of flames…

Firefox In The Lead

Firefox In The Lead

Hello boys and girls. Today’s topic is… browser statistics. Before we continue, you may want to have a quick look at Phono Phunk’s browser stats (updated each month). Interesting aren’t they? Now, I’m not going to pretend I understand some of the strange activity in a few spots, but overall I see an extremely clear trend. Internet Explorer usage is dropping while Firefox usage increases. As a matter of fact, last month shows us that Firefox gains a lead for the first time, while IE usage is at an all time low. I’ve been a big Firefox fan for a while now, so it’s great to see that most of my viewers are starting to use it too.

Oh… and let’s not forget the community support Firefox is getting right now. Even Robert Scoble noticed the bling bling collected by Mozilla Foundation’s New York Times fund-raiser.

WSG Meeting In Melbourne

05 Oct 2004 11:23 PM

I decided to get my ass out of the house and go hang out with a few geeks after hearing that Doug Bowman and Dave Shea were coming to Melbourne for a WSG meeting. Got to meet some cool people like Andrew Fernandez (Dez), Cameron Adams, Peter Firminger, Dave and many others I’ve forgotten right now. I’d never met anyone before the meeting so I dragged my business partner and sister along (much to Peter’s delight) just in case things got sticky. ;)

I’ve Been Pirated

01 Oct 2004 05:37 AM

Well, well… Looks like some newbie over at Angelfire has decided to pirate Phono Phunk. I love the fact that he’s still linking directly to my images, css, posts and music! What a talented guy. He’s even managed to steal one of my mp3s, converted it to a wma, and offering it as one of his own along with other music he’s ripped off. What an honour. To top it off, he’s even displaying my google ads! This guy really wants to help me make money.

I always thought this site’s design was unique enough to prevent anyone from trying to pass it off as their own. I guess I was a tad optimistic. ;)

UPDATE: Since this guy is linking directly to my CSS I thought I’d have a bit of fun. He’s using an embed tag inside h2’s which is something I would never do. Hmmmm… this looks a little more interesting now doesn’t it!! :)

UPDATE 2: I reported this to Lycos and they have removed the offending page.

UPDATE 3: Here are some screenshots of the pirated site.

More Gmail Invites Part 2

12 Sep 2004 03:50 AM

I have a few more Gmail invites, so if you still don’t have one, leave a comment.

I’ve noticed some really irrelevant stuff in my Google Ads today. It’s funny how Google seem to have picked one of my previous posts and decided my entire site was related to it. It might be time to try out their ad filter :)

Update: All invites are gone.

Fixed Or Liquid?

11 Sep 2004 09:29 AM

Fixed Or Liquid?

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but being the sadistic bastard that I am, I thought I’d bring it up again. The current version of this site gives you the choice of using either a fixed or liquid layout via the style sheet switcher in the sidebar. I thought about trying to gather some stats on which style sheet people were using most, but I’m in a typical lazy non-coding mood right now. Well, the next best thing I could think of was to post an entry here asking you what you prefer. Yeah I know, brilliant solution there JB!

More Gmail Invites

09 Sep 2004 10:20 PM

I’ve been given a few more Gmail invites and I’m running out of people to give them to. It seems like most people already have one these days. So if you don’t already have one and feel a little left out, please leave a comment here. Remember to leave an email address otherwise I won’t be able to contact you!

Update: All invites are gone.

Free Info

08 Sep 2004 07:07 AM

You people are so lucky. There’s more free stuff for you out there. I saw this over at Forever Geek. It looks like DomainSite are giving away 25 free .info domains to anyone who creates an account. Hurry before they change their minds…

Update: I was told that NameSecure and Dotster have similar deals. I tried them but they ask for your credit card details. DomainSite doesn’t! If anyone knows of more, please leave a comment here.

Gee. Mail?

07 Sep 2004 05:57 AM

John from Wow Factor was kind enough to give me one of his gmail invites a few days ago. Now, it’s time for me to spread the love. The first 6 people to guess what type of underwear I prefer to wear get a gmail account. Just to make it easier, we’ll make it multiple choice:

Don’t forget to leave your email address so I can get in contact with you ;)

Update: All invites are gone (some people emailed me). Thanks for participating! The correct answer was (b).

Phono Phunk On Unmatched Style

01 Sep 2004 08:36 PM

Another day, another gallery entry! It looks like Ryan Latham thought that this site was good enough to add to the unmatched <style> gallery. I’m glad to see that he mentioned the style switcher because it took quite a bit of effort to get this site working with a liquid layout. I was starting to wonder whether anyone even noticed it. Thanks for the review Ryan. I appreciate the feedback.

Web Standards At Work

31 Aug 2004 12:35 AM

How many of you use web standards at work? I’m one of those developers that love the idea behind web standards, but rarely get to use them in the workplace. Clients are getting cheaper every day and the amount of time it takes to create accessible cross browser CSS layouts never seems to fit into the budget.

Autism Victoria

Recently, the company I work for landed a client (Autism Victoria) that had some minimal accessibility requirements. This was a good opportunity for us to educate the client on the business value of web standards and web accessibility.

Phono Phunk Version 2

28 Aug 2004 09:45 PM

Phono Phunk Version 2

Back in May, I said “something new will be popping up here very soon.” I was working a new design which I thought I’d have ready within a few days. A few days turned into a few weeks. I got busy with work and a few weeks turned into a few months. I finally got a chance to work on it and a couple of thoughts came to me after looking at it again. Did it really look this bad? I’m sure it looked better when I was working on it a month ago! What the hell was I thinking? Well, you get the drift. The new design was crap, so I decided to stick to what I had and tweak it instead. I guess redesigning really is hard to do.

Phono Phunk On CSS Beauty

27 May 2004 01:52 PM

Just wanted to say thanks to Alex from cssbeauty.com for adding this site to his CSS design showcase. I also wanted to let everyone know that something new will be popping up here very soon. Stay tuned for more…

I’m Honoured

30 Jan 2004 12:39 AM

I'm honoured

It looks like a few more people have noticed this site over the past month or so. The nomination for “Best Designed Australian Blog” in the Keks 2004 Australian Blog Awards took me by surprise, because I never really considered this site to be a “blog". An even bigger surprise was seeing the site listed in Jeffrey Zeldman’s “for your pleasure” section. I’ve been a big Zeldman fan for a while now. It always feels nice to get a little recognition from your peers. Thanks guys. I’m truly honoured.

Happy New Year

09 Jan 2004 09:02 PM

Happy New Year

Happy new year to everyone! I know it’s a few days late, but it couldn’t be helped. I was woken up by a loud clicking sound in the early hours of new years eve, wondering what the hell it was. Turns out my primary drive decided it was time to die. It was a 2 year old 40GB Quantum HD given to me by my boss.

I decided to replace it with a 120GB Western Digital, since I already have 1 in this box and love it. The only problem was finding a store with one in stock around this time of year. Either the store was closed or they didn’t keep large hard drives in stock. I’ve been using an old 3GB HD temporarily, until a few days ago, when I discovered my buddy DJ Jeff Tyler had a new 120GB Western Digital HD sitting in his cupboard. Special thanks to Jeff for the new drive (you still owe me though!).

While I’m at it, I’d also like to thank everyone that has linked to this site for one reason or another. So, a big thank you to:

IE / Win Gap Between List Items

18 Dec 2003 03:26 AM

I recently ran into an IE / Windows bug while trying to create a vertical css menu from an unordered list of links which needed to have a width specified. IE would leave a 3-4 pixel gap between each list item. Find out how to fix it…

Phreakin. Why? Who Knows!

26 Nov 2003 09:00 PM

Phreakin. Why? Who knows!

I launched a new layout for www.phreakin.com today. Notice anything familiar? Yep, that’s right. It’s basically a rip off of my blue alternate style sheet with some additional fixes. Seems to work well in the latest generation of Windows browsers (IE5.5+, Moz 1.4+ and Opera 7+), but I have no idea what it looks like on a Mac. If there are any Safari users out there who have problems with my layout, please let me know!

Update: Special thanks to Justin Goodlett for helping me squash a little Safari bug with the nav menu!

Doing It With Style

08 Nov 2003 05:15 PM

Doing it with style

More geeky site updates for you. If you take a quick look to your left, just under the navigation menu, you will notice a site style selector (if you can’t see it your browser isn’t supported). You can now choose from 2 different visual styles, as well as 3 different font sizes.

Time To Redesign

05 Oct 2003 02:50 PM

Time to redesign

It’s that time of the year again, when I get completely bored and redesign my web site. Some of you may know that I’m a web developer. You wouldn’t have guessed it by looking at the sloppy code on my last site though!

It was time for me to kick my own ass back into gear and do what all the other cool kids were doing. XHTML, CSS, table-less design. Yes, I know. It’s completely geeky and won’t help me get any chicks.
